The Care Development Team works with Community Safety Partnerships to deliver Senior Safety Days in the county. These events target older people living independently in their own homes.
The aim is to raise older people's awareness of issues concerning their health and safety and provide people with advice, information and access to appropriate services.
The programme consists of talks and an exhibition to highlight personal, home, and general safety, health and well being. Mornings are divided into four sessions, with participants divided into groups to attend talks from the Fire and Rescue Service, Health Improvement and Police and the exhibition.
The exhibitions feature a range of local and national voluntary and statutory services, offering practical support, information and advice. Participants have the opportunity to take part in an 'exhibition quiz' which encourages them to take full advantage of the information available to them.
Topics covered within the exhibition include fire prevention and detection (smoke alarms) and evacuation , personal security (door locks, spy-holes ) and bogus callers, welfare benefits, energy efficiency, falls prevention, medicine management, carers' support, food hygiene and community alarms.
Trained staff are available throughout the day to administer First Aid if required and free 'door to door' transport is provided to participants on request. The events are free to people over 6o years, and to their carers, with refreshments and lunch provided.
